15-year-old Rylie Romero Headlines WRWC Breakaway Roping Challengers

15-year-old Louisiana native, Rylie Romero leads the pack of competitive challengers as the field has been officially set for the record-setting Women's Rodeo World Championship, May 14-20 at the historic Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas. Romero and longtime friend Brylee Braden have been battling for the converted number-one challenger position throughout the season, however, it was Romero who came out on top, thanks to a handful of clutch, last-minute nominations.

Romero explained it's the comradery between the breakaway ropers- particularly with Braden and her family, that makes the number one position that much sweeter. “Brylee and her family are always there to support everyone, and she and I have truly pushed ourselves to be the best we can be. I am grateful to experience this level of competition with her.”

Romero, who has been nominating her breakaway runs since clenching her spot for the CINCH World Championship Junior Rodeo gleamed with excitement and gratitude as she reflected on earning the number one position.

“I’m so grateful for this opportunity to compete on such a large stage against my career idols. Having the opportunity to rope alongside them and so many great ropers means so much. As a challenger, this is a phenomenal opportunity and I couldn't be more excited for the Women's Rodeo World Championship come May.”

The third-generation cowgirl accredits her success to her mother and sister, who have supported her and competed alongside her throughout her life. She also acknowledged her great horse, “Buster”, accrediting the ten-year-old bay for her recent success.

Romero explained, “He was originally my sister’s horse, and we were about to sell him until I won the Hooey Junior Patriot on him. Since then, he has been my best mount and I wouldn't be anywhere without him.”

The 15-year-old sophomore has already built quite the resume. From recent appearances at the WCRA Cowtown Christmas Showdown to recently clinching her spot in the Texas High School State Finals, the year is already shaping up to be a bright one for Romero. She explained, “I’m so excited about these upcoming opportunities and plan to take it one calf at a time. It’s an honor to compete at these events and I look forward to seeing how it all shakes out.”
