Brett Woolsey earned herself a coveted spot in BFI Week History books, earning the 2023 Smarty All-Around Champion at the Bob Feist Invitational Charlie 1 Horse All-Girl Day. For Woolsey, the Charlie 1 Horse All-Girl Day was a marathon that ended with the Arizona cowgirl earning the 2023 Smarty All-Around Title. The day started bright and early for the young cowgirl, who headed toward the Lazy E Arena in the wee-early hours of the morning around 2:30 AM.

From there, Woolsey would go on to battle the big dogs and rope against her idols. Woolsey explained, “It was definitely nerve-wracking thinking about who I was roping against, I just had to remember to stay calm and consistent.”

Woolsey picked up checks in both the team roping and breakaway, allowing her to be eligible for the coveted title. Woolsey and header Quincy Sullivan roped sharp in the first round with a time of 7.97 seconds, which was good for the third-place check. Woosley explained she has entered the Charlie 1 Horse Breakaway Roping for years now, but this was her first time in the team roping. “I couldn't have asked for a better experience” Woosley grinned as she reflected on her first time entering the Charlie 1 Horse Team Roping.

Woosley knew she had to stay focused and consistent in the breakaway roping to reach her goals. It was her smart and consistent roping throughout the two long rounds that earned her the sixth-highest callback heading into the Short Round. Sticking true to her consistent roping, she made a smooth run to contribute to her aggregate time of 12.40 seconds on three head, finishing sixth in the aggregate.

When the dust settled, Woosley also took home the Breakaway Roping 18 and Under Instinctive for a total of $4,500 earned during the Breakaway Roping. It was this win that clinched the Smarty All-Around title, taking home Smarty roping dummies and unforgettable memories.

“I’m so grateful for this opportunity. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.” gleamed the 17-year-old cowgirl.

For the Arizona high schooler, this big win is only the beginning of her career. The Mesa, Arizona native currently competes in the Arizona High School Rodeo Association and plans to continue her rodeo career in college and at the professional ranks. The young cowgirl is leaving the famous Lazy E Arena with a multitude of prizes and a priceless smile after a successful marathon of a day at the Charlie 1 Horse All-Girl ropings.
