Nearly one year ago, the 94th annual Chincoteague Pony Swim took place. This event consisted of the “Saltwater Cowboys” rounding up the wild ponies on the southern and northern islands of Assateague. Large crowds gathered to witness this special swim event, followed by the carnival and pony auction. Unfortunately, it has been announced that the 2020 Chincoteague Pony Swim has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

The last pony penning event to be cancelled was over 78 years ago during the Second World War. The decision to cancel this year’s event wasn’t made easily, but with crowds of 40,000 plus people it was deemed too risky. If you’re still interested in obtaining an island pony this year, the foals of the pony herd will be auctioned off via an online auction. You can find details at Sport Horse Auctions!

Since this year’s event won’t take place, let’s reminisce over 2019’s previous highlights!

The ponies will be missed by many this year. Let’s hope to see them in 2021!
