Rising star Brina Kay's new EP Dandelion, and accompanying video, serve as a strong reminder to others that it's okay to be exactly who you are. It's the perfect way to start Mental Health Awareness Month, with its beautiful and touching message to ourselves, both past and present, when things may feel hopeless.

We got to chat with Brina about her inspiration behind this project and what's next for her!

Prior to the pandemic, Brina's plan was to put a full band together and focus on playing bigger, longer, full-band shows. Unfortunately, the global shutdown disrupted her plans. She recalls, "At this point, I had already released four singles and two music videos since moving to Nashville, so I felt like I was ready to graduate from one-off releases and attack a bigger project. I reached out to my producer about working together on an EP and he was all for it. We started the process by going through every single song I'd written over my time in town and eventually narrowed it down to the six you're hearing today."

The title track Dandelion is not only a letter to her younger self, but is also a message that still resonates with Brina as she navigates adulthood – and one that so many others can relate to. "When I was a kid, I often felt like I wasn’t always accepted. I was overly energetic, I was “weird” and I tended to question authority and the status quo way of doing things," she explains. "Back then, it made me feel like I didn’t belong, or that there was something wrong with me, but I’ve grown to realize that those attributes are what make me unique and special, and they’re something to be proud of."

"I didn't write all of these songs with the intent of putting them together like this one day, but taking a step back and looking at the project, to me I really see a journey toward self-love and acceptance, with the title track "Dandelion" being the glorious day of arrival."

She's got quite a busy schedule coming up!
