For all the vegan cowgirls out there, Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez of Adriano Di Marti have developed a faux leather made from nopal (a kind of cactus) that they call Desserto.

Velarde and Cázarez have been working on the project for two years, and have created a product they’re more than proud of.

Desserto is explained in detail on the Desserto website:

“Within the ranch, after cutting the mature leafs, we dry them under the sun for 3 days until achieving the humidity levels that we are looking for. So there’s no oven or additional energy use like gas in this process. Then we process the organic raw material to make it part of our patented formula which is going to allow us to make the Cactus Vegan-Leather which we call DESSERTO. Please note that the plantation is fully organic, so there are no herbicides nor pesticides. All the remaining organic cactus material which is not used in our formula is exported and sold nationally in the food industry, so you can imagine how organic and safe our material is.”

Their “leather” is toxin and chemical free, uses little water, and is partially biodegradable. You can’t ask for anything better than that in vegan leather!

FYI: Desserto is also PETA-approved.
