Many German horse breeds are found in countries all over the world. In the United States, riders enjoy them in various disciplines like dressage and show jumping. Some are even found working on farms and in Western events. These horses have been skillfully bred.

German Horse Breeds

1. Trakehner

Popular in dressage and eventing, the Trakehner horse is tall and athletic. They range from 15.3 to 17 hands and up to 1,200 pounds. This breed is similar in build to a Thoroughbred, and are considered a lighter warmblood.

2. Holsteiner

One of the oldest warmblood breeds, the Holsteiner has been bred for seven centuries. Because of their expressive movement, these horses are found in upper level dressage, jumping, and combined driving. They range from 16 to 17 hands and up to 1,500 pounds.

3. Black Forest Horse

This horse breed is known as a light draft type. They're used for farming and agriculture. In Germany, the Black Forest Horse is called Schwarzwälder Kaltblut. These horses are patient and gentle, but incredibly strong. They range from 14.2 to 15.3 hands and up to 1,400 pounds.

Other breeds like the Hanoverian, Oldenburg, and German Riding Pony are worth mentioning. Germany is filled with some incredible horses. Many can be found competing in high levels!
