Ever heard of the event called Double Mugging? If not, it’s probably because this rodeo event can only be found on the islands of Hawaii. This native event combines the idea of steer wrestling, tie-down roping, and team roping all in one event!
The concept? One parter, the roper, ropes the steer from the chutes. Once the steer is caught, the partner on the ground, or the runner, helps to wrestle the steer to the ground. Together, they mug the steer and tie it down for the fastest time.
The coolest part of double mugging in Hawaii is that girls can enter this event too! It’s few and far between that you see a woman back into the box to throw a steer or tie down a calf. But how about combining the two to show off some serious girl power! It’s safe to say, never mess with a Hawaiian paniolo (cowgirl)!
This picture was from the Panaewa Stampede Rodeo, where cowgirls competed in a double mugging event dedicated just for the ladies! They called this event the the wahine (woman) mugging!
Double mugging can be found at almost all of the Hawaiian stampede rodeos, even at the high school rodeos! You can read more about this event here!
