While most horses enjoy the companionship of other horses, there are occasions when they find friends in more unusual places. Many farms have a mix of animals from cows and goats to dogs and chickens. There have been some instances were horses have befriended an animal of another species. The horse may have been lonely or maybe just had an interest in this new animal.

Best of Friends

This wonderful friendship between a cow and horse is precious to watch! They're happily grooming each other.

Friends eat together! This goat and horse share a bite to eat. Goats make great companions for lonely horses. They can even share the horse's stall.

Donkeys are equines, so not necessarily a different species. They do make great companions though! Most are easy keepers and can protect the herd.

Dogs and horses have more of an unusual friendship, as they're prey and predator animals. When introduced carefully, they can get along great though! Many riders will take their dogs with them on the trails.

Sheep and horses can easily live in harmony. As seen with these two, most them are happy to graze together.
