Water is vital to your horse’s health. It’s a known fact that horses tend to drink less in the winter, which means it’s your job to encourage them to stay hydrated. The best way to do this is to ensure they have a source of clean, warm water at all times. It can be difficult to keep buckets from freezing, but these handy items will immensely help!
A great place to start this winter is with a heated bucket. They are available in 5 gallons and 16 gallons. The bucket is controlled with a thermostat. It kicks on when temperatures drop below 38, and turns off when the water reaches 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
For those that turnout their horses and use a large water bucket, a submersible heater is a great option. This one is constructed of cast aluminum and has a 3-year warranty. It’s safe for plastic and steel tanks with no guards needed! It will only operate when necessary and is controlled with a thermostat.
Another great option for those with larger water buckets. The Styrofoam float has a rugged plastic housing with a cord that exits from the top of the unit. If used in a non-metallic tank, a snap-on guard is necessary to protect the sides of the bucket.
Winter will be so much easier if you invest in a heated hose. Water will no longer freeze in your hoses. It’s available in 25′ and 50′ lengths. The hose is thermostatically controlled for efficient use and can be ran continuously or plugged in when needed.
Trust me, you don’t want to be without a water heater this winter. Frozen buckets are no fun!
