Miniature horses have nutritional requirements that are similar to regular horses, but with one exception- quantity! The amount they need to consume is much less. One of the leading issues with minis is obesity. They're also at risk for foundering. By carefully monitoring their diet, you can ensure they stay fit and healthy.

Tips for Feeding Your Miniature Horse

  • Horses should receive 1% of their body weight in hay. For the average 200-pound mini, this would be around 2 to 4 pounds of forage.
  • Ideally, 2nd cutting hay offers the most nutrients. It'll depend on how your hay was harvested though.
  • A slow feeding hay net can extend the time it takes for your mini to consume their daily ration. The goal is to let them eat throughout the day with no large gaps of time between meals.
  • Be careful of early spring grass. A dry lot or grazing muzzle can prevent them from becoming overweight.
  • Your miniature horse needs at least 5 gallons of water per day.
  • Mineral salt can encourage water consumption.
  • A ration balancer can ensure they meet their nutritional requirements.
  • Only add a textured or sweet feed if your horse needs it. Most minis do not!
  • Minis are known for having dental issues, so make sure to have their teeth checked yearly. This will prevent any problems with chewing their hay.

The same principles apply to big and small horses. Miniature horses are known as easy keepers, so their diet should reflect that. It can be helpful to monitor their body condition score. You don't want your mini overweight or too skinny.
