Have you ever heard of a Kiger Mustang? You might think you’re not familiar with that breed of horse, but you will be surprised! A Kiger Mustang is the breed of horse that Spirit from the movie “Sprit: Stallion of the Cimarron” is!

In 1977, the Kiger horses were discovered by the Bureau of Land Management in the desert of southeastern Oregon. In order to protect this new breed, they moved a band of them to areas not of the Steens Mountains close to the Kiger Gorge. It is from this area that the breed was given the name.

More often than not, Kigers are duns. But, their colors can include bay, black, grullo, red dun, or roan. They have also been known to be colored up as a mixture of dun and cream with a linebacker dorsal called claybank.

All proceeds from these photos of Spirit’s muse by Meg Frederick will be donated to Return to Freedom!

Did you know that the real life Spirit had a birthday and turned 25 on May 8, 2020?!
