There are two predominant types of leg protection in the Western world. Let’s go over them!

Chaps are typically made out of leather and cover the full length of the leg. They were originally made to protect cowboy and cowgirl’s legs from the rough country they rode in. They can be seen in an assortment of colors, with or without fringe, in various shapes and sizes.

Chinks are similar to chaps, however, they normally end below the knee instead of all the way to the boot. They are more associated with buckaroos, originating from Spanish vaqueros. Similar to chaps, chinks can come in an assortment of colors, shapes, sizes, fringe lengths, the amount of tooling, and more.

Both chinks and chaps can be seen in the show pen or out on the ranch. The choice between the two stems from personal preference.
