As the dust settled at the World Champion's Rodeo Alliance's first major event of 2023-Rodeo Corpus Christi, champions of the event took home $15,000 each, and the opportunity for a shot at the infamous Lazy E Ranches Triple Crown million-dollar bonus. In the Breakaway Roping, it was none other than World Champion Martha Angelone who secured the victory. Walking away with $15,000 and a famous Rodeo Corpus Christi surfboard sure made for one sweet birthday for the Virginian cowgirl.

Angelone earned her spot in the Showdown Round of Rodeo Corpus Christi by being at the top of the leaderboards going into the rodeo. This advantage placed her in a competitive pack of 7 ropers, all vying for a spot in the top to advance to the Triple Crown of Rodeo Round. Among the World Champion Breakaway Roper in the final shootout were young guns, Kerstin Freeman and Kamryn Robison from Cooper and Groesbeck, Texas respectively. After some tough luck for Freeman and Robison, Angelone backed into the box knowing there was just one calf standing between her and the famous Rodeo Corpus Christi Champion surfboard. Angelone put together a snappy run of 2.03 seconds in true champion fashion to secure the victory.

In an interview with the WCRA, Angelone explained her game plan never changed going into the final round. "I didn't want to safety up, it normally doesn't work well for me when I do. I knew I just had to go for it."

This victory also served as the first leg of the race for the Lazy E Ranches Triple Crown of Rodeo million-dollar bonus. Angelone will look to become the second athlete- and first cowgirl to capture this title at upcoming WRCA Major events. Looking forward, Angleone will look to capture her second win in a row this week at the Women's Rodeo World Championship in Fort Worth, Texas.
