Apples may be your horse’s favorite fruit, but did you know there’s quite a few more that are safe and yummy. You can expand your horse’s palate with a whole collection of fruits. Many have vitamins that are beneficial. Treat your horse to some new yummy snacks and you may discover a new favorite!

Safe Fruits for Your Horse

  • Apples
  • Oranges
  • Banana
  • Apricot
  • Blackberry
  • Watermelon
  • Pineapple
  • Plum
  • Peaches
  • Pear
  • Coconut
  • Grapefruit
  • Strawberries
  • Cherries

Most of these have healthy minerals and vitamins, such as potassium, vitamin C and A! Make sure to remove seeds and any choking hazards. Most should be fed the way a person would eat it. For example, you should remove the core and skin of the pineapple. It can be fed in rings or chunks. Another is cherries- pit them and only feed the fleshy part.

These are not safe for your horse to consume!

  • Avacado
  • Rhubarb
  • Nightshade plants like tomatoes

Like any treat, the safe fruits should only be fed in small quantities. Large amounts can cause digestive issues for your horse. Share your horse’s favorite snack!
