A custom wood entertainment center can absolutely set the state for your living or great room. You don't necessary need a HUGE entertainment center to achieve that huge presence. There's all sorts of things you can do!

The two pieces shown above by @porterbarnwood are both absolutely stunning in their own way! The one on the left is part of a huge statement wall. While the one on the right is more minimalistic, yet just as beautiful.

Now this one is cool! It takes up the entire wall from floor to ceiling thanks to the shelving units. However, it still has that beautiful raw wood accent in the center.

This one is just the opposite! The only thing on the wall is the TV and we love it just the same.
